Attributes

Every entity in Obscured, be it a Hunter, NPC, or Horror, has six fundamental attributes representing their strengths and weaknesses. Each attribute has a corresponding modifier used in relevant checks. The average human has an attribute score of ten, which results in a modifier of 0. Hunters and Horrors can have attributes significantly above or below this average.

Formula

Modifier = (Attribute - 10) / 2

To compute an attribute's modifier, subtract ten from the attribute's value, divide the result by two, and round down to the nearest whole number. Let's break it down step-by-step:

Example Calculation:

If a Hunter has a Strength score of 15:

  1. Subtract 10: 15 - 10 = 5
  2. Divide by 2: 5 / 2 = 2.5
  3. Round down: 2.5 becomes 2

Therefore, the Strength modifier is +2.

Strength

Strength measures a Hunter's raw physical power and athletic ability. It is crucial for tasks like breaking down doors, leaping over chasms, or wrestling with monstrous foes.

Example

With a mighty roar, John attempts to shove back the ancient stone slab blocking the entrance. John has a Strength of 8... the unyielding slab refuses to budge.

Durability

Durability assesses a Hunter's resilience and capacity to endure physical punishment. It determines a Hunter's ability to withstand damage, resist disease, or fight against pain.

Example

David grits his teeth and fights to stay conscious despite the numbing poison spreading through his veins. "Not again, dammit, not again..."

Intellect

Intellect indicates a Hunter's mental acuity, wealth of knowledge, and capacity for logical thought. It covers characteristics like problem-solving skills, specific knowledge areas, and the ability to analyze complex patterns.

Example

Amy carefully examines the crime scene, meticulously piecing together the sequence of events from scattered clues before her friends can walk all over the important details.

Awareness

Awareness gauges a Hunter's sensory perception and attentiveness to their surroundings. It helps Hunters detect danger, spot hidden details, or sense the presence of supernatural phenomena.

Example

David notices an almost imperceptible ripple in a puddle – the barely detectable sign of an otherworldly creature nearby. No one believed him, of course, but he knew.

Dexterity

Dexterity encompasses a Hunter's precision, agility, and overall physical coordination. It's vital for moving stealthily, performing intricate tasks, or dodging incoming danger.

Example

With practiced ease, Amy deftly picks the lock, granting her team access to the hidden vault.

Charm

Charm evaluates a Hunter's social prowess, force of personality, and ability to deceive or manipulate. It relates to a Hunter's ability to persuade, negotiate, or intuit the hidden motivations of others.

Example

John flashes a disarming smile as he weaves a convincing tale to distract the nosy security guard while David and Amy hide the body. He hopes this doesn't become a habit.
