Health
A Hunter's health is their most precious resource. It represents their physical resilience, their grit, and their determination to keep fighting against the darkness. Understanding how to calculate and manage your Hunter's health is crucial to surviving the horrors that await.
Calculating Hit Points
A Hunter's health is measured in Hit Points (HP). When creating a new Hunter, their starting HP is determined by rolling 2d8 and adding their Durability modifier. If either d8 roll is less than 4, you can choose to reroll it once.
For those who prefer a more predictable approach, you can forgo the dice rolls and start with a base HP of 10 + your Durability modifier.
I've seen too many rookies get taken out because they didn't know their limits. Your HP isn't just a number on a sheet - it's a reflection of your Hunter's will to live. Respect it, manage it carefully, and it'll keep you alive when the claws come out.
Leveling Up
As your Hunter grows and evolves, so does their HP. Each time you gain a new level, roll 1d8 and add the result plus your Durability modifier to your maximum HP. Just like at character creation, you can choose to reroll a result of less than 4 once.
For those using the predictable method, simply add 5 + your Durability modifier to your maximum HP at each new level.
If your Durability modifier changes at any point, your total HP is retroactively adjusted. This means if your Durability increases, you'll gain additional HP as if you had that modifier from level 1.
Amy: "I can't believe we survived that encounter with the ghost train. I feel like I've learned so much about my own abilities and limits."
Overseer: "Surviving a challenge like that deserves a reward. Congratulations, you've all reached level 3! Roll your dice and add your Durability modifiers to increase your HP."
David: (rolls) "I got a 6 on the d8, plus my Durability modifier of +2. That's an extra 8 HP for me!"
John: "I rolled a 3, but I'm going to use my one reroll... and it's a 7! With my modifier, that's a solid 9 HP boost."
Amy: "As usual, I'll take the predictable route. 5 + my Durability modifier of +1 gives me a respectable 6 extra HP."
Overseer: "Excellent! You're all a little tougher and more prepared for the challenges ahead. But don't get too comfortable - the Horrors are always adapting, always finding new ways to test your limits."
Calculating HP with the average value
For Hunters using the average value method, there's a simple formula to determine your total HP at any given level:
HP = (Durability modifier × level) + (5 × level) + 5
This formula assumes you're taking the base 5 HP per level, and calculates your total HP based on your current level and Durability modifier.
Managing your HP is a crucial part of survival in Obscured. Always be aware of your limits, and don't be afraid to retreat and regroup when necessary. Your Hunter's life depends on it!
